Libraries Say No to Tech Overlords

Several major research libraries have rebuffed offers from Google and Microsoft to scan their books into computer databases, saying they are put off by restrictions these companies want to place on the new digital collections. Instead, they have decided to go with the Open Content Alliance who do not put any restrictions on the distribution of the works involved. Google's deal contains a clause that prevents the libraries from sharing their books with any other commercial companies. Such restrictions are not healthy for the widespread distribution of ideas and so the Libraries are quite right to refuse to enter into a limited deal with either Google or Microsoft, whose main aim is to exploit these works for profit.
