After completing undergraduate Digital Media Production studies in my home country of Australia, I moved to Amsterdam in 2006 to undertake an internship at the Netherlands Media Art Institute. My work here introduced me to the fascinating world of media art, and subsequently lead me to apply for a masters in Preservation & Presentation of the Moving Image at the University of Amsterdam (which I began in September '07). Recent archival studies in this programme have opened my eyes to the increasing use of found footage, creative commons and public domain licensed media in video production; the use of which I am very interested to continue exploring in my own video work.
Being relatively new to the world of remixing I used Final Cut Pro to edit together this video, as it was the software I was most familiar with. However, for future remix and creative commons themed works I would also be especially interested to investigate what I can do with open source alternatives.
For my first experiment in remix video I wanted to create a short work entirely from creative commons licensed media, with an aim to simply illustrate the vast amount of this content that is available online, and the potential for using it in creative ways. I was also very interested in demonstrating the opportunities that remix culture combined with the Internet present for collaborative work, which for me reflects exciting new ways of communicating and interacting globally. I chose the Sydney Opera House as the subject of my piece not only for it's connection with my homeland, but also for it's iconic appearance and the amount of material available online. This short video was made possible through the use of creative commons content (with an attribution or attribution share-alike license) from more than 100 individuals, which when remixed together brings to life this beautiful building in a unique composition.
